Welcome to our plot!

I'm Hazel, and in Nov 2006 my friend Jane and I took on a half plot at Hill Allotments, Sutton Coldfield - we want the satisfaction of growing and eating our own fruit and veg, and to improve our diet (and fitness!).

This is the story of what happened next...........

Just When The Cold Spell Was Ending...

...the snow starting to melt, & I thought that I might stand a chance of at least going to the Hill for some veg at the weekend (absolutely NO chance of getting up there last weekend), we've had another covering of snow today - a couple of inches of light stuff starting overnight & continuing for much of the day.

The difference, though, between today's snow & last week's is that then after it snowed huge fairytale flakes, it went so cold (it didn't rise about zero day or night for over a week) so that there was a week of solid ice.

But today the temperature is about zero & the snow has been small flakes but sticky - non-slippery to walk on - & great to make snowballs with.

Actually, analysing snow types like some sort of eskimo - who have 32 words for snow apparently - probably means I'm going a bit stir-crazy being mostly confined to quarters, so the forecast higher temperatures in the next couple of days will be most welcome...

  1. And what's wrong with 32 different words for snow? {giggle}

  2. We have 32 different words for fabric, don't we Bilbo?

    I'm off shortly for a visit to my allotment to liberate some leeks and try to lift a bit of oca. It's annoying to have lots of veg underground in the snow!

  3. I agree, Hazel. I've been confined to the house since Saturday now, but now I'm feeling almost back to normal I'm going food shopping when Mike gets back. Out into the wide world at last! Even if shopping isn't my favourite thing.
    I'm also with you on the Christmas tree thing - much rather have a real one. Every year, since we were married,I took on the job to choose one, set it up in the house, and then eventually dispose of it. Hate to admit it, but over the past couple of years it became a job too many, especially now that I've taken on more of the physical jobs, since M's illness. Thinking of having just a small, real one, perhaps in the porch, next time.
    By the way, Mike is very keen on pointing out my grammatical and spelling errors, for which I apologise. But all I learnt at school has gone by the board, as these days I only ever scribble short letters to friends and family .....and shopping lists.

  4. Only one word for snow again now (although you will still have 32 different words for fabric, I am sure) - it's all melted and I'm going to try & liberate some leeks & parsnip tomorrow.

    I'm glad you're feeling better - and can get some fresh air, Christine. Not much to do but look at the plot at the mo, though!
