Welcome to our plot!

I'm Hazel, and in Nov 2006 my friend Jane and I took on a half plot at Hill Allotments, Sutton Coldfield - we want the satisfaction of growing and eating our own fruit and veg, and to improve our diet (and fitness!).

This is the story of what happened next...........

A System For Successional Seed Sowing

Now we are well into the month, I can get my FEBRUARY seed envelope out.

I spent a very happy hour or so over Christmas making a Chart to show in which month (or months) each of the vegetable types can be sown - for example, radish are sown each month from February to September inclusive; onion seeds just in January; broad beans in February & again in April, & so on.

Then I marked an envelope for each month & put the seed packets into the envelope corresponding to the first of the sowing months.

At sowing time, I can take the month's envelope & sow those seeds, then consult the Chart & re-file the packets into the next relevant month's envelope.

Or I could, had I not (a) deleted the chart from the computer by mistake & (b) not thrown away the printed off copy.

My February sowing has consisted of:

  • PARSNIPS (saved white gem) in tall kitchen roll inners
  • a few LETTUCE (arctic king & mini green)
  • a pot of LEEKS (hsl early market)
  • four small pots of SPRING ONION (apache) for planting out in a clump
  • one-per-square pot of BROAD BEANS (witkiem manita)
Last but not least, I will be taking a packet of RADISH (french breakfast) seed to the Hill at the weekend to sow a short row.

Now all I have to do is reconstruct the Chart to see which envelope to put each of the seed packets in for the next sowing - it's a job to look forward to, to while away a winter's evening, & we still have plenty of those.

  1. how gutting that you lost your chart. Just as well you still have your head :o) I was so well intentioned with getting ahead on my Feb sowing but I've been ill since Thursday, boo. Will get onto it next week, after I've cut back the autumn raspberries. Have fun x

  2. Altogether too organised for me! Life has a way of stopping me from getting on top of things. Baby minding all this week!

  3. Repeat after me: "oh b*gger"

Mucho sympathies because I once did the same thing - with someone's appraisal - after I had shredded the hand-written copy (and yes, I had to put the shreddings back together again - fortunate it was in the days before cross-cut shredders!)

  4. What are you growing in the long kitchen roll tubes? They make lovely root trainers!

  5. Wow, you are very organised. I'm lazy and get email reminders from Gardenate. My seed organisation only stretches to storing them in alphabetical order.

This is my first visit to your blog, I have enjoyed seeing your allotment and wish you success with the sowing.

  6. I have now reconstructed my chart! I know what I'm doing again - well, as much as I ever do anyway!

Just how far did your heart sink when you realise you'd shredded that appraisal, Bilbo!

Parsnips are in the kitchen roll inners, Matron - when I sowed in loo roll inners last year, the parsnips forked where they got to the bottom of the tubes - maybe I left it too long to plant them out.

Welcome, Tracy, thank you for dropping by! I now have to go and google Gardenate - I would welcome reminder emails too - I may have a system, doesn't mean it works...

  7. So did google like Gardenate?

I felt your pain when you discovered you had removed your seed plan :O

  8. It told me nothing that all my 'systems' don't already tell me, so no extra emails for me - nice to have a tootle round another gardening site, tho'!
