I'm Hazel, and in Nov 2006 my friend Jane and I took on a half plot at Hill Allotments, Sutton Coldfield - we want the satisfaction of growing and eating our own fruit and veg, and to improve our diet (and fitness!).

I Didn't Expect THAT!

I wasn't free to go to the Hill over the weekend, so last night I was keen to see what ten days of warm & wet weather has done to the plot.

I was delighted that all the crops are growing apace, but not too much in the way of weeds - brilliant!

I hadn't planned to stop to do anything bar harvesting whatever was ready, but ended up thinning the annuals (OK - the odd thistle too) out of the flower border at the front, just to give it a tidy up.

I dug up a couple of POTATO plants (int kidney & mona lisa) for a couple of handfuls of new spuds, then whipped over the BROAD BEANS (saved) where I found plenty of 6" pods, perfect for shelling for fingernail sized beans.

The sweet peas are in full bloom & so a good handful of those came home with me too, one of the LETTUCE (dazzle) & a small armful of rhubarb sticks.

Star of the show, however, were these magnificent cauliflowers, hiding in their leaves - they have been growing since the autumn in with the curly kale, and have been no trouble at all, & are a good 10" across each head.

Not having anything planned for them, kitchen wise, but reluctant to risk them going over, I picked them both & have broken them into florets and frozen them - I'm planning a cauliflower cheese bonanza at the weekend!

    Co-oncidence? I had cauli cheese last night, mucho yummy with a couple of rashers of bacon cooked really crisp and chopped finely on top just as it finished cooking ...

  3. what a splendid pair of caulis.
    I have mona lisa spuds too but haven't lifted any yet. Had some valor from last year that had re-seeded themselves in a patch that needed digging so I had some of those for tea. I'm not a fan so don't count them as my first spud harvest of the year yet!

  4. amazing cauliflowers! They are supposed to be quite difficult to grow well, you have done that!

  5. I had a marathon cauli cheese session & it's batched up in the freezer now.

    I was very chuffed with the two caulis - they were from tray of 10 seedlings bought on offer from Homebase in September, the other three which survived I don't think will not head up (plenty of huge leaves tho').

    The mona lisa seem to be cropping quite well, Nic - all new spuds taste brilliant, especially with enough butter on them!

  6. What great heads of cauliflower!

    have you tried cauli and potato salad?

    A drizzle of olive or vegetable oil... a bit of vinegar, touch of mustard and little dollop of mayo... some green onions perhaps.... and spices of choice. I have some fresh basil, rosemary and thyme in my patio pots... so toss in a bit of those chopped fine...

    Sometimes I toss in a few crumbles of crispy bacon...but, not often.... however, it is very tasty....
