Welcome to our plot!

I'm Hazel, and in Nov 2006 my friend Jane and I took on a half plot at Hill Allotments, Sutton Coldfield - we want the satisfaction of growing and eating our own fruit and veg, and to improve our diet (and fitness!).

This is the story of what happened next...........

Seed Tapes pt2

A quick trip to the Hill tonight - quite late on - in order to water the tomatoes, & to sow seed tapes of CELARIAC (monarch) & SWEDE (virtue). The former should be in the miscellaneous bed, & the latter in with the brassicas, but I bunged them in with the roots due to lack of room in their 'proper' beds.

I was surprised to see novice neighbour Jody, he'd made good progress weeding the front bed where he'll be putting his brassicas, and it looks super - he was also planting out some healthy looking squash & courgettes.

Yet another inspection of the PEAS (hsl newark) & BROAD BEANS (barry plot19) - I'm willing them on! The pods are there, and growing fast - just not fast enough!

  1. This time of year you are willing everyhting out of the ground. In another month you'll wonder if you can eat them all fast enough!

  2. True, Flum - it's just that now the kale has finally finished, the only thing between me and scurvy is the lettuce, until the beans and peas come on!

  3. Hi Hazel. Just did a quick google on runner beans. They all say pinch out when they get to the top of the canes. One guy (RHS) did suggest pinching out at 6" as this help the flowers polinate. Sounds a bit drastic to me. He also suggested tying your bean sticks in the middle as this made them spread out and gave a better yield. Maybe I'll try that next year.
